Shoe Orthotics for Back Pain

Shoe Orthotics - For The Win!   PM&R News   •   October 13, 2017 Low back pain remains one of the most common conditions for which individuals seek medical care. When it comes to chronic low back pain, many treatments are ineffective and opioids should be avoided. During the examination of patients with chronic low back pain, foot alignment and dynamic foot positioning is often not performed and is overlooked as a potential contributor to the condition. What’s that Image?

What's that image? PM&R News   •   September 1, 2017     First you have to remember some of the basic principals of brain imaging. This is a head CT which is best at viewing acute pathology in the form of bleeds but often misses acute cerebrovascular accidents. The three main type of bleeds you should be thinking of are subdural hematoma, epidural hematoma, and subarachnoid hemorrhage, with intraparenchymal hemorrhage being an additional type. Neurologic Recovery After Cardiac Arrest

Neurologic Recovery After Cardiac Arrest   PM&R News   •   August 1, 2017     Current guidelines recommend targeted temperature management at 33-36° C for 24 hours in unconscious patients after cardiac arrest. Some have questioned whether longer temperature control would further improve neurologic recovery. This multicenter, randomized trial set to evaluate this question. Three hundred and fifty five unconscious adult patients, who experienced out of hospital cardiac arrest were enrolled and randomized to 33°C for either 24 hours or 48 hours with gradual rewarming afterwards. Neurologic outcome at 6 months was evaluated using the cerebral performance category score.  Secondary outcome included 6 month [...]

Percutaneous Needle Tenotomy for the Treatment of Lateral Epicondylitis: A Systematic Review of the Literature

Percutaneous Needle Tenotomy for the Treatment of Lateral Epicondylitis: A Systematic Review of the Literature   PM&R News   •   July 12, 2017 Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) is a common condition that affects many individuals across all activity levels.  Tennis elbow is typically caused by repetitive wrist extension and supination with an underlying malalignment of collagen fibers in the wrist extensor tendons.  Ninety percent of these cases tend to resolve without treatment within 12-18 months. Common treatments consist of rest, NSAIDs, physical therapy, bracing, corticosteroid injection or even surgery.  Percutaneous needle tenotomy is becoming more popular and little evidence exists to determine its’ effectiveness.  [...]
