2021 Insights

2021 Insights PM&R News   •   January 2, 2021 2020 has brought a lot of change to the practice of medicine, many of which will greatly impact our patients for years to come. This year has taught us to embrace change and make that change as impactful as possible.  For example, many were resistant to telehealth, but now I wonder how we ever lived without it?  I admit that a new patient evaluation can be difficult over telehealth, but do I really need to see a patient 4 weeks post injection to ask if their pain is improved?  That could easily be accomplished [...]

I know I feel a little more accomplished when my Apple watch seems to arbitrarily tell me that I’ve hit a certain threshold of steps taken or calories burned throughout the day. One commonly held belief with unclear origin is that 10,000 steps/day is a goal associated with good health. One prospective cohort study aimed to examine the associated of number of steps per [...]

Cluneal Nerve Entrapment and Low Back Pain

Cluneal Nerve Entrapment and Low Back Pain PM&R News   •   August 2019 The superior and middle cluneal nerves are cutaneous nerves which are purely sensory and provide most of the sensation to the low back and buttocks. The most common site of entrapment is around the iliac crest. Cluneal nerve entrapment can produce symptoms of low back pain, leg pain, and groin pain. These symptoms are often exacerbated by lumbar movements, and mimic radiculopathies. Superior cluneal nerve entrapment (SCN-E) can also cause intermittent claudication. Identification of the trigger point at the site of entrapment, and subsequent resolution of symptoms after a nerve block [...]
